PostgreSQL will finally come (replication) batteries included

with 2 comments

Personally I’d say this is about 4 years overdue. While there are replication options for PostgreSQL, no one seems to particularly care. The lack of simple built in replication is the second most common reason I see for MySQL adoption over PostgreSQL. The most common is speed, despite results that seem to indicate that the two are roughly at parity.

I think this is a great move that will really boost PostgreSQL adoption.

  1. Yeah, this is good news for the PostgreSQL community. When I was much more involved in the PG community.. there was a lot of talk about replication but the emphasis was on more choices for people and not having one included in core.

In many ways… this reminds me of Rails versus Merb. Rails made choices up front and people could stray from them as they wished. Merb gives you several options and you have to make the choice.

MySQL made an up front choice whereas PostgreSQL didn’t. People have been trying to figure out which replication tool would be the most appropriate for the majority of the use cases and this is a huge turn off for people. I’ve used several of them and none of them have been as seamless or as easy to configure as the MySQL replication.

People like to have choices made for them and I look forward to seeing what the PostgreSQL community agrees on.
